Domain
Name Guide:
The
difference between domain extensions:-
All
domain names are accessible from anywhere in the world, there
is no performance difference.
One
of the main difference is in that .com's are perceived as being
international and .co.uk's are seen as being UK based. Therefore
if your company has an international market a .com domain would
be a good choice whereas, .co.uk is ideal for companies primarily
focused upon the UK.
.co.uk,
.me.uk and .org.uk, domains are registered with Nominet, the UK
Internet names organisation, and will be registered on your behalf
on the understanding that you have read and accept their terms
and conditions.
.ltd.uk
and .plc.uk domains can only be registered by the limited company
or plc who's name correspond with that company.
.com.
net and .org domains can be registered for between 1 and 10 years,
.biz,
.info domains must be registered for between 2 and 10 years.
With
total registrations in the .uk database as of 30th September
2004:
Over 3,6 Million it can be hard to find the domain you
want, with many of the best domain allready registerd. There are
several options you can use to get around this problem.
1.
You can insert a - in between your name e.g if your company was
called abc supplies and the domain abcsupplies.co.uk is taken
you could try
abc-supplies.co.uk
2.
Another popluar method is to try one of the new domain sufixes
such as abcsupplies.gb.com or if you were targeting Europe you
may try abcsupplies.eu.com
