is web hosting ?
For
a website to be seen on the internet, it needs a web server to
reside on. When people visit a website they are actually accessing
files on this web server. Web hosting can be thought of as renting
space on a web server.

Instead
of paying a web hosting company, can I just host my website on
my PC connected to my broadband Internet connection?
Technically,
yes. There are certain limitations that this would produce however.
Chances are, your home broadband connection cannot compete with
the high-speed network that most hosts have their webservers connected
to. In fact, it would be hard to compete with the infrastructure
that many web hosts have in place – eg. uninterruptible power
supply (UPS) and heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) systems,
physical security, etc. Many ISPs will also not allow their lines
to be used in this way unless you have a costly business plan
with them.

What
Is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth
is the total amount of data that your will transfer from your
website to your visitors computers per month. It includes both
web visits and email traffic. At present less than 1% of our users
exceed their bandwidth limites.

How
do I upload my site?
The
easiest way to upload your website is by using an FTP (File Transfer
Protocol) program. Popular FTP programs include Cute
FTP, WS
FTP and SmartFTP.
Internet Explorer also has a built-in FTP program that can be
used. Some programs used to develop websites (such as Microsoft
Frontpage®) are able to upload your website files as well.
You can also use the file manager located within the control panel.

What
is shared (also known as "virtual") web hosting
Shared
(or "virtual") hosting means that your website resides
on a server that is simultaneously hosting other sites. Your site
will be allocated a set amount of disk space and data transfer.
Note that although the server is being shared by other sites,
your site's files are protected and secure, unable to be accessed
by the server's other users.
